KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Stephens College volleyball team left the Avila University triangular with losses to host Avila and the University of St. Mary, but the team finished with four extra-point sets on the day. The Stars opened against host Avila and fell 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 28-26). They went on to play St. Mary and took them into five sets after taking a 2-1 deficit (24-26, 25-13, 25-20, 26-28, 15-5). The Stars are struggling to find their first win of the season and now hold a 0-5 record.

Avila def. Stephens, 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 28-26)

The Stars pushed Avila into extra points twice in their three-set match, and they outhit Avila in set three with a .280 hitting percentage, 14-12.

The Stars had four with 6+ kills, led by Danielle Kirk with nine. Shelby Johnson finished with eight and a .385 hitting percentage, and Shay Wilkerson and Darby Jones each contributed six. Wilkerson led the team with a .417 hitting percentage (6-1-12).

Danielle Craven finished with 29 assists, and libero Halan Mann and Tylar Grant each recorded 13 digs.

 

St. Mary def. Stephens, 3-2 (24-26, 25-13, 25-20, 26-28, 15-5)

The Stars took a close set one to St. Mary to start the second match of the day, 26-24. St. Mary won the next two to take a 2-1 lead, but the Stars refused to quit and won set four 28-26 to tie the match at 2-2. St. Mary ended the match with a 15-5 set five win.

The Stars again had four players with 6+ kills. Wilkerson hit .588 on the match with a team high 13 kills. Kirk and Johnson recorded nine, and Grant had six.

Craven assisted 43 kills, and Mann dug up 25 attacks.

 

The Stars travel to Canton, Mo. on September 8 to play Culver-Stockton College at 7 p.m
